## In short

Since 10 July 2026, most ChatGPT Shopping product cards come from feeds sent to OpenAI rather than from web search: the share jumped from 8% to 61% in a day and reached 65% by September. Stores without a connected catalog are out of those recommendations. Shopify and Etsy are already connected; everyone else requests access and prepares a file with nine required fields, updated daily.

- Since 10 July 2026, 61% of ChatGPT Shopping recommendations come from integrated feeds, up from 8% the day before; 65% by September.
- 450 of 687 tracked stores lost at least a third of their visibility within three days; the ten most-cited merchants rose from 22.5% to 41.8% of references.
- Shopping appears in 62% of fashion prompts and 56% of other physical-product prompts, almost never for services, software or travel.
- The feed has nine required fields (id, title, description, url, brand, seller, image, availability, price) and should be sent in full every day.
- Feed, product page and structured data must state the same price and availability: inconsistencies cost more than absence.

Until mid-2026, ChatGPT Shopping picked the products it recommended mostly by searching the web, as it does for any other question. Since 10 July 2026 that is no longer true: most of the product cards that appear in answers now come from the feeds merchants send to OpenAI. If you sell online and your catalog is not connected, you are not even in the running for more than half of the recommendations. Here are the numbers, what triggers Shopping mode, and how to prepare your feed.

## What changed in ChatGPT Shopping on 10 July 2026?

In a single day, the share of recommendations retrieved from integrated feeds jumped from 8.26% to 61.54%. [Profound](https://www.tryprofound.com/blog/chatgpt-5.6-shopping-transformation) measured it across 1,757,723 Shopping-triggering prompt runs collected in July 2026 (a 50% sample, counted once per prompt per day). Before that date ChatGPT sourced products almost entirely from web search; afterwards, feed retrieval overtook web search and by 3 September it accounted for [about 65%](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/chatgpt-shopping-results-lean-hard-on-product-feeds/589000/) of tracked recommendations.

The shift coincides with the release of the GPT-5.6 models on 9 July. OpenAI has not publicly linked the two, and the release notes for those days do not mention shopping, as [Search Engine Journal](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/chatgpt-shopping-results-lean-hard-on-product-feeds/589000/) points out. The data is observational and covers the prompts tracked by Profound's customers, not all of ChatGPT. But the direction is clear: the feed has become the main source.

## Why does it matter for your online store?

Because visibility moved overnight toward merchants with a connected feed. Among the 687 stores Profound tracked that had at least one product card a day between 7 and 12 July, [450 lost at least a third](https://www.tryprofound.com/blog/chatgpt-5.6-shopping-transformation) of their Shopping visibility when comparing 7-9 July with 10-12 July, while 67 gained by the same margin. A statistical model on the 517 stores with swings above 33% explains 83% of the movement with two variables: how much web search lost and how much the feed gained.

The market also concentrated. The ten most-cited merchants went from [22.5% to 41.8%](https://www.tryprofound.com/blog/chatgpt-5.6-shopping-transformation) of references, and the number of distinct merchants cited fell from 13,524 to 10,607, a drop of more than 20%. Around 35% of all feed retrieval involved Shopify stores, whose catalogs are connected automatically. In plain terms: less room, and those inside take more of it.

Two useful clarifications. Organic product cards are not ads: [OpenAI states](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/chatgpt-shopping-results-lean-hard-on-product-feeds/589000/) that results are selected independently by ChatGPT and not influenced by partnerships. And people who shop through AI remain wary: in a Gartner survey of 846 US consumers, [54%](https://news.designrush.com/chatgpt-shopping-makes-bad-product-data-harder-hide) of those who used AI for a recent purchase said they had to double-check all the information. A feed with wrong prices or stock does more harm than no feed at all.

## When does ChatGPT show product cards?

Almost always for physical products, almost never for services, software, travel and finance. Profound analyzed [100.7 million prompt runs](https://www.tryprofound.com/blog/chatgpt-shopping-prediction) between September 2025 and January 2026 and measured how often Shopping mode appears by category.

| Prompt category | How often Shopping appears |
| --- | --- |
| Apparel and fashion | 62% |
| Other physical products | 56% |
| Groceries and consumables | 30% |
| Health | 6% |
| Vehicles and large equipment | 2% |
| Travel and hospitality | 0.6% |
| Services | 0.5% |
| Software | 0.1% |

Intent matters too: within physical products, prompts with commercial intent ("which hiking backpack under $100") trigger Shopping in [76% of cases](https://www.tryprofound.com/blog/chatgpt-shopping-prediction), informational ones ("how to wash a backpack") in 17%. Profound's rule of thumb: if the main noun in the question is something you could buy on a marketplace, the cards appear. If you sell a service or software, this article barely concerns you: what counts for you is visibility in text answers, which the rest of this blog covers.

## How do you get your catalog into ChatGPT's feed?

It depends on your platform. If your store runs on Shopify or Etsy, the catalog is [already connected](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/chatgpt-shopping-results-lean-hard-on-product-feeds/589000/) through the platform integrations: check in your admin that the channel is active and that products are eligible. For other stores, direct feed access is requested from OpenAI's merchant page and is waitlisted; alternatively you go through feed providers such as Salesforce and Stripe, connected via the Agentic Commerce Protocol, which was extended to product discovery on 24 March 2026.

The format is a table with one row per product. According to [Alhena's guide](https://alhena.ai/blog/chatgpt-shopping-product-feed-guide/), checked against OpenAI's commerce documentation on 30 September 2026, nine fields are required:

- `item_id`, `title`, `description`, `url`;
- `brand`, `seller_name`, `image_url`;
- `availability` and `price`.

Recommended fields include `gtin`, `mpn`, `sale_price`, `product_category`, `material`, `color`, `size`, `review_count`, `star_rating`, `shipping_price` and the return policy fields. Two flags decide where a product can appear: `is_eligible_search` (on by default) and `is_eligible_checkout`. OpenAI recommends a full file once a day plus API updates during the day for price and stock; a product that disappears from the file expires within 14 days. One caveat: the same guide notes that standard uploads target the US market, with Canada and Mexico set up separately. If you sell from Europe, ask which markets are covered when you apply, rather than assuming.

## Does your website still matter?

Yes, for the third of recommendations that still come through web search, and for consistency between feed and page. Before the July shift, a Peec AI study of roughly 43,000 products across 5,000 ChatGPT carousels found that [83% matched Google Shopping organic results](https://www.dataiads.io/en/blog/chatgpt-shopping-use-gmc-google-shopping-product-data-carousel-study), 60% of them from the top ten. That share weighs less today, but the web-search portion still works this way: if your product ranks well in Google Shopping and carries correct `Product` and `Offer` structured data, it has a better chance of getting in. Our guide to [structured data for GEO](https://geosnap.ai/en/blog/dati-strutturati-schema-geo-quali-servono) explains how to set it up.

The most neglected point is consistency. The feed says one price, the page shows another; the feed says "in stock", the page says "sold out". For an assistant answering a wary shopper, those gaps are a reason to pick another store. Align title, price, availability and images across the feed, the product page and the structured data, and update the feed as often as your prices change.

Finally, measure. Traffic from ChatGPT shows up in Google Analytics 4 as a referral from `chatgpt.com`: our [measurement guide](https://geosnap.ai/en/blog/traffico-da-chatgpt-come-misurarlo-google-analytics-4) shows how to isolate it. To know whether your brand appears when someone asks for a product in your category, you need to monitor prompts instead: with Geosnap you can track your customers' typical questions on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode and see who gets cited in your place. And if you want to pair organic presence with a campaign, [ChatGPT Ads](https://geosnap.ai/en/blog/chatgpt-ads-o-visibilita-organica-come-dividere-budget) is a separate channel with different rules.

## Where to start this week

1. **Check whether your category triggers Shopping.** Ask ChatGPT five questions your customers typically ask and see whether product cards appear, and from which stores.
2. **Check the connection.** On Shopify or Etsy, confirm the channel is active and how many products are eligible. Elsewhere, submit the feed access request and ask which markets it covers.
3. **Prepare the file.** Nine required fields with no gaps, then GTIN, category, variants, reviews and shipping. Validate a 100-product sample before the full upload.
4. **Align feed and site.** Same price, same availability, same images on the product page, in the feed and in the structured data.
5. **Set a rhythm.** Full file every day, price and stock updates during the day, monthly check of citations in category prompts.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is ChatGPT Shopping available outside the US?

Product cards can appear for users in other countries, but the public feed documentation names the US as the standard market, with Canada and Mexico set up separately. The most reliable way to find out is to test: ask five questions your customers typically ask and see whether cards appear, and from which stores. When you request feed access, ask explicitly which markets it covers.

### Are ChatGPT product cards paid ads?

No. OpenAI states that Shopping results are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not influenced by partnerships. ChatGPT Ads is a separate channel with its own campaign system and does not replace the organic feed.

### I run a Shopify store: do I need to do anything?

Shopify catalogs are connected to ChatGPT through the platform integration, and in July 2026 around 35% of feed retrieval involved Shopify stores. Still, check in your admin that the channel is active, that products are eligible, and that prices, availability and images are current.

### Is the feed enough, or do I still need to optimize the site?

You need both. Roughly a third of recommendations still come through web search, where Google Shopping rankings and Product and Offer structured data matter. Above all, feed and page must agree: price or availability mismatches make your store look less reliable to the assistant.

### How often should the feed be updated?

The recommendation reported from the documentation is a full file once a day, plus API updates during the day for price and availability. A product that disappears from the file expires within 14 days; to remove it sooner, set the is\_eligible\_search flag to false.
