How AI reads this page

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity don't look at colours, images or animations. They receive text, headings, links and structured data. Below is exactly what they read when they open “Answer-format content: how to write pages ChatGPT and AI Mode actually cite”.

The AI receives 2,174 words in 9 sections, 15 links and 3 blocks of structured data.

## In short

Answer-format content is a page where every section answers one precise question in its first sentence, with a figure, its source and the name of who is saying it in the same passage. AI engines break a question into sub-searches and pick passages, not pages: according to Ahrefs only 38% of AI Overview citations come from the top ten results. Google confirms there are no special requirements: you need clear text, descriptive headings and structured data that matches what is written.

- AI engines look for passages, not pages: the first sentence of every section must stand alone as the answer to the question in its heading.
- Classic rankings matter less than before: in the Ahrefs study 62% of AI Overview citations come from pages outside the top ten results.
- Google asks for no extra requirements for AI Overviews and AI Mode: content in text form, structured data that matches the text, crawling allowed and internal links.
- Headings written as real questions, one table per question with units in the headers, and one sourced figure per section make the passage extractable.
- Put the brand name in the same sentence as the figure: in Semrush's data the overlap between mentioned brands and cited domains can be as low as 30% on Gemini.

You have a page that explains a topic well. It is indexed, maybe even on page one of Google. Yet when you ask ChatGPT or Google AI Mode the same question, the answer cites someone else. In most cases the problem is not your site but the way the page is written. AI engines do not read the whole page and reward it "overall": they look for the passage that answers one precise question and lift it. This guide shows, with before-and-after examples, how to rewrite a page so that passage exists.

## What is answer-format content, and why do AI engines prefer it?

It is a page where every section answers one specific question on its own: the first sentence gives the answer, the next sentences explain it with data, examples and conditions. When an AI engine builds a response, it breaks the user's question into many smaller searches. Google calls this technique ["query fan-out"](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) and uses it in both AI Overviews and AI Mode. For each of those searches the engine is looking not for a page but for a passage. If your passage is clear, self-contained and complete, it can be picked even when the page is not ranking first on Google.

The data backs this up. In an [Ahrefs study](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-overview-citations-top-10/) of 863,000 search results and 4 million URLs cited in AI Overviews, only 37.9% of citations came from pages in the top ten results; 31.2% sat between positions 11 and 100 and 31% were outside the top 100. A year earlier the top-ten share was around 76%. The correlation with classic rankings has halved: what matters more now is how well a single passage answers the sub-questions the engine generates.

The same logic applies to the number of sources. According to [Semrush's AI Visibility Index](https://www.semrush.com/news/463141-semrush-releases-expanded-2026-ai-visibility-index-analyzing-126-million-ai-search-prompts/), based on 126 million prompts analysed between January and April 2026, ChatGPT cites an average of 15 sources per response and Gemini about 3. There is room, but it goes to whoever supplies a ready-to-use piece of the answer.

## What does Google say you need to appear in AI answers?

Nothing special, and that is the point. Google's [official documentation](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) states that "there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode": the page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. No AI files, dedicated markup or special schema are needed. Google's recommendations are the usual ones, but read through the eyes of an engine that extracts passages they become very concrete:

- **important content in text form**: a figure inside an image, a PDF or a video without a transcript will not be picked up;
- **structured data that matches the visible text**: schema confirms the sentence on the page, it does not replace it;
- **crawling allowed** in robots.txt and by your CDN, otherwise nothing else matters;
- **internal links** that make the page easy to find.

The [helpful content guide](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/creating-helpful-content), updated on 5 October 2026, adds the questions to ask about the text itself: does the heading give "a descriptive, helpful summary of the content"? Does the page "provide original information, reporting, research, or analysis"? Does it demonstrate "first-hand expertise", for example from having actually used the product? Does it carry a byline where readers expect one? These are the same traits that make a passage citable. For the technical side, see our guide on [which structured data matters for GEO](https://geosnap.ai/en/blog/dati-strutturati-schema-geo-quali-servono).

## Before and after: the opening of the page

The first fix concerns the opening lines. Take a travel agency in Manchester with a page about group tours to Japan.

> **Before.** "Japan is a land of contrasts, where tradition meets modernity. For years we have taken our clients to discover this wonderful country with itineraries designed for every need. Get in touch to find out about our offers."

> **After.** "A 12-day group tour of Japan departing from Manchester costs between £3,400 and £4,000 per person in 2026, flights included. The most requested periods are late March (cherry blossom) and November (autumn colours). Groups are 12 to 16 people with an English-speaking guide. Below you will find what is included, what is not, and how the price changes by season."

The "after" version works because it answers four real sub-questions in four sentences: how much, when to go, how big the group is, what is included. Each can be extracted on its own. The "before" version contains nothing an engine can lift, and nothing a reader can compare.

The rule: the first sentence of every section must be able to stand alone as an answer. Then you explain, add exceptions and context. If the sentence starts with "for years", "we are leaders" or "discover", rewrite it.

## Before and after: headings, lists and tables

The second fix concerns structure. AI engines use headings to work out which question a block of text answers. A generic heading loses the passage even when the content is good.

| Before | After |
| --- | --- |
| Our services | How much does managing a 20-unit apartment building cost? |
| Why choose us | What the fee includes and what is billed separately |
| Insights | How often the owners' meeting is held and who calls it |
| FAQ | Can you change property manager before the contract ends? |

Write the questions in headings the way people ask them, not the way a marketing department would. A simple way to find them: take the ten questions your customers ask by phone or email in their first week, and turn each into an `h2`.

Lists and tables are for answers with several parts or several cases. A comparison of three plans, delivery times by area, the documents needed for an application: in a table these are data an engine can read and report; inside a ten-line paragraph they become a vague sentence like "times vary". Keep one table per question and put units in the headers (pounds, days, km) so the number stays readable out of context.

## Before and after: data, sources and the brand name

The third fix concerns what is inside the sentence you want cited. Three elements matter more than the rest: a precise number, where it comes from, and the name of who is saying it.

> **Before.** "Our customers save a lot on energy costs thanks to our innovative solutions."

> **After.** "According to data from [name of the engineering firm] on 40 systems installed in the North West between 2024 and 2025, an 8 kW heat pump cuts the annual heating bill of a 120 m² detached house by roughly £750 to £1,100 compared with a gas boiler, with the variation depending on insulation and tariff."

The second version has a number, a sample, a period, a condition and the name of whoever measured it, all in the same sentence. That last detail is the most neglected. In Semrush's data, [being mentioned in an answer and having your site cited as the source are two different things](https://www.semrush.com/news/463141-semrush-releases-expanded-2026-ai-visibility-index-analyzing-126-million-ai-search-prompts/): on Gemini the overlap between mentioned brands and cited domains can be as low as 30%. If your name is in the footer and the figure is in the paragraph, the engine's summary keeps the figure and drops the name. We covered this in our article on [ghost citations](https://geosnap.ai/en/blog/citazioni-fantasma-ai-cita-il-sito-ma-non-nomina-il-brand-cosa-fare).

Two cautions. First: the data must be true and verifiable, with a link to the source if it is not yours; engines compare several sources and an isolated, unattributed figure carries less weight. Second: do not stuff the page with random numbers. One figure per sub-question, in the first or second sentence of the section, is enough.

## How do you check whether the rewrite is working?

With a before-and-after test on the same questions, across several engines. Before publishing the new version, write down the 10 to 20 questions the page is meant to answer and ask them to ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode, noting whether your page appears among the sources and whether the brand is named in the text. Repeat the test two or three weeks after publishing: AI answers change often and a single check tells you little. In Geosnap this comparison is the prompt monitoring across the three engines, with mentions and citations counted separately; you can see how it works on the [features page](https://geosnap.ai/en/features).

Look at Search Console too: Google [includes clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) in the Performance report under the "Web" search type, without separating them. You will not know how many come from AI, but you will see whether the page's impressions grow on the questions it now answers explicitly. Google adds that clicks coming from result pages with AI Overviews are "higher quality", meaning users spend more time on the site: one more reason to measure time on page, not just visits.

One last thing: rewriting in answer format does not mean writing for machines. Questions in headings, the answer up front, numbers with their source and the name of who is speaking are also what a reader in a hurry wants to find. If the page becomes more useful to them, it becomes more citable for the engine.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does writing answer-format content mean?

It means organising the page by questions: every heading is a real question and the first sentence of the section answers it completely and on its own. Explanation, sourced data, examples and edge cases follow. The passage has to make sense when read alone, because that is how an AI engine lifts it.

### Do I need a special format or markup to appear in Google AI Mode?

No. Google Search Central's documentation says there are no additional requirements for AI Overviews and AI Mode and that no AI files or dedicated schema are needed. The page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet; structured data, if you use it, must match the visible text.

### Can my page be cited by AI if it is not on page one of Google?

Yes. In the Ahrefs study of 4 million URLs cited in AI Overviews, 31.2% of citations came from pages ranking between positions 11 and 100 and 31% from pages outside the top 100. What matters most is how well the passage answers the sub-questions the engine generates.

### How much data should I put on a page?

One figure per sub-question, in the first or second sentence of the section, with the source linked if it is not yours and the name of who measured it in the same sentence. Filling the page with unattributed numbers does not help: engines compare several sources and an isolated figure carries less weight.

### How do I know whether the rewrite worked?

Ask the same 10 to 20 questions to ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode before publishing and again two or three weeks after, noting whether the page appears among the sources and whether the brand is named in the text. In Search Console, clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the Web search type: check whether impressions grow on the questions you now answer.
