Web sources cited by AI when talking about your category: how to find them and why they are key to your GEO strategy.

What Sources Are

Sources are the web references that AI engines cite or use as reference in their responses. They are the most actionable data from GeoSnap because they represent the concrete touchpoint between traditional web and AI visibility.

When an AI engine generates a response, it often refers to specific web sources: articles, reviews, comparison pages, documentation, guides. GeoSnap collects and analyzes all the sources cited in AI responses related to your category, showing you:

  • A complete list of sources cited by AI engines

  • Citation frequency: how often each source is referenced

  • The context: in response to what questions (and intent) the source is cited

  • The associated brand: whether the source mentions your brand, a competitor, or none

Why Sources Are Essential

Sources represent the most direct leverage to influence your AI visibility. While you cannot directly control how an LLM generates responses, you can influence the sources these models use.

If an authoritative source in your sector positively cites your brand, AI engines are more likely to include it in their responses. Similarly, if the most cited sources by AIs in your category do not mention your brand, it is unlikely that AIs will include you in their responses.

Types of Sources

Sources cited by AIs typically include:

  • Review and comparison sites (G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, etc.)

  • Industry blogs and publications (authoritative articles, guides, analyses)

  • Media and news (journalistic articles, press releases)

  • Official documentation (brand sites, product pages)

  • Forums and communities (Reddit, Quora, industry communities)

  • Academic and research content (papers, studies, reports)

How to Use Source Data

The most effective strategy is to identify frequently cited sources that do not mention your brand and work to establish a presence on those sources. This may mean reaching out to publications, creating content for comparison platforms, or contributing to industry communities.

In the Insights & Actions section, GeoSnap provides specific recommendations based on the identified sources.
